Dead Christ Supported by Angels

Dead Christ supported by angels
end of XVI century – first part of XVII century
oil on wood, size: cm. 107 x 75.

This painting compares very favorably with a Palma il Giovane’s similar work in the Museo Civico, Reggio Emilia (Palma il giovane, l’opera completa, Stefania Mason Rinaldi, 1984, no. 515, p.390).

The subject represented is the moment after the death of Christ, also termed Pietà. The angels tenderly support the dead body and present him to us for our contemplation. It was supposed to be an altar piece, in order to create a direct visual link between the painting and the Holy Communion, in which the host and the wine are turned into the body of Christ.
