Portrait of a young republican

GIUSEPPE MAZZOLA

GIUSEPPE MAZZOLA
(Invozio di Valduggia, Vercelli, 1748- Milan 1838)

Portrait of a young republican
Around 1802
Oil on canvas, 24 x 19.2 inch

The hairstyle and the glaring recall to the tricolour leave no doubts on the enthusiastic subscription of the portrayed to the Cisalpine Republic (a sister republic of France in Northern Italy that lasted from 1797 to 1802) and to the political and cultural renovation that it represented for the Lombardy society, indicating the dating of the painting to the beginning of the 19th, information that, together with what we noticed regarding the style, persuade us to attribute the painting to Giuseppe Mazzola, Piedmontese artist who moved to Milan in 1802 encouraged by his friend Sigismondo Ruga. Triumvir of the Cisalpine Republic, together with Giovan Battista Sommariva and Francesco Visconti, Ruga introduced Mazzola to the most relevant people of the Milanese society of the time, helping him to obtain his first commissions followed then by the ones of distinguished characters of the Republic and of the Kingdom of Italy, like Giuseppe Antonio Petrolini, the Marquis Federico Fagnani and Francesco Melzi d’Eril.
