FRANCESCO NENCI
(Anghiari 1782 – Siena 1850)

Venus presenting Aeneas weapons forged by Vulcan
 1827
Oil on canvas, 31.5 × 41.5 in
with frame ascribed to Angiolo Barbetti, around 1861, 48.6 × 58.5 in
Signed and dated F. Nenci 1827

The painting, signed at the bottom and dated 1827, is a very important work of Francesco Nenci, coming from a famous Florentine historical collection. Its recovery marks a fundamental knowledge acquisition in the field of correct cataloguing of the works of Nenci, a rather significant figure, not by chance much appreciated by his contemporaries, as well as subject of even recent studies. Of the painting, displaying the famous episode of the First Book of the Aeneid, exists also a preparatory drawing, which recently appeared on the antiques market.
