Rather, he seems to find a more appropriate context within the context of German sculpture. Specifically, our Diavoleria finds a highly suggestive comparison with the group, similar in theme, preserved in the Städtische Galerie in Dresden, in which the demonic figure seems to mirror the pose of the character condemned to eternal torment, atop a skeleton that in turn recalls the skulls that populate our group. It can be traced back to the Walther family, a dynasty of Dresden sculptors active between the sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries. I therefore believe that our anonymous modeler found in precedents such as this one useful material for conceiving this bizarre Diavoleria, the execution of which must be dated to the first half of the eighteenth century.
