There is a copy of the Portrait of a Man made in 1850 by the Romanian painter Gheorghe Tattarescu (Bucharest, Municipal Museum), who at the time was living in Rome where, thanks to an artistic pension, he was able to attend the Accademia di San Luca from 1845 to 1851. It is a much more modest version of the original and lacks the emotional intensity that characterizes it; however, not only does the date of its execution establish a terminus ante quem for our painting, but the title Sailor by which Tattarescu’s painting is known may suggest identifying the character depicted with Vasilij Koriotskij, the Russian sailor protagonist of a literary story set in the time of Peter the Great […]
