[…] depicts an episode previously rendered in art—such as in Pietro da Cortona’s magnificent painting at the Louvre—concerning the mythical twins Romulus and Remus. After being suckled by the she-wolf, they were discovered by Faustulus, a shepherd in the service of Amulius; he took them to his hut atop the Palatine Hill and, together with his wife Acca Larentia, decided to raise them as his own children. For this composition, Camuccini likely drew upon Plutarch’s Life of Romulus as a source.
