Chronological evidence indicates that only the children on the right are the actual offspring of the central couple: Giacinta (1806–1830), the eldest; the twins Giovanni (Giovanni Nepomuceno, 5th Prince of Cerveteri, 1807–1876) and Virginia (1807–1878), shown pulling an elegant carriage; and the young Carolina (1809–1873) and the infant Luigi (1813–1887), seated inside the carriage. Long considered the work of an “unknown master,” the canvas was correctly attributed after being compared with another famous family work La Colazione (The Family Breakfast, 1807). The discovery of an engraving of La Colazione bearing the inscription “Painted by Carlo Labruzzi” made it possible to credit both paintings to the Roman artist, who is primarily known as a Neoclassical landscape painter.
